A FREE TRIP GUIDE TO THE LOST RIVER RANGE — WRITTEN BY THE PEOPLE FILMING THERE

Custer County has a new visitor guide, and it didn't come from an agency.

"Twelve Places in the Lost River Range," a free 17-page field guide published this month at borahvista.com/guide, covers twelve destinations in and around the Lost River Valley — Mount Borah, the North Fork of the Big Lost, Trail Creek Road, Sun Valley mountain biking, Mackay, Sunbeam Hot Springs, whitewater on the Upper Salmon at Stanley, Challis Hot Springs, Spar Canyon Road, Morgan Creek Road, the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge, and the ghost town of Custer.

Each place gets one page: drive time from Mackay, what the road actually is, when it opens, what it costs, and the cautions nobody prints in a brochure — the snow bridge on Borah's Chicken Out Ridge, spring runoff at Sunbeam, flash-flood country in Spar Canyon. The guide carries 51 photographs, names real local businesses with phone numbers, and states outright that nothing in it is a paid placement.

The guide is a companion to Borah Vista, a ten-episode documentary series that premiered on YouTube on August 8 and releases a new episode every Saturday morning through September 26. The series follows Jason Leue's attempt to put a log cabin on seven acres outside Mackay — no water, no power, no driveway, and, by his own account, no experience beyond having once built a deck. Every episode names the real places it was filmed in; the guide tells visitors how to go stand in them.

Both the guide and the series promote non-consumptive recreation only — hiking, paddling, soaking, scenic driving, and wildlife photography — a deliberate choice in a region where most tourism marketing leads with hunting and fishing.

The guide's own advice on timing: September, if you get to pick. Empty campgrounds, cold nights, gold aspen, and the roads all still open.
